This Impala SS is faithful to the original concept. The old Caprice
engines couldn't easily achieve tightening smog mandates, so GM was
forced to call on the Corvette LT1. The same technology that makes
the LT1 fast also helps to make it clean.
In sedans, the LT1 gets iron heads and new intake and exhaust
manifolds tuned for less noise. The 5.7-liter is optional across
the Caprice lineup, making 260 hp at 5000 rpm and 330 pound-feet of
torque at 3200 rpm. And if they're going to get LT1 motors, they
ought to have the proper chassis bits to make full use of the
engine. Indeed, the Impala SS is the only model to get those
bits.
At the drag strip, the Impala SS made its forebears proud. Meaty
BFGoodrich Comp T/As (size 255/50ZR-17) put the Impala's power
right to the ground, per�mitting a quarter-mile of 15.0 seconds at
92 mph. That puts the 4221-pound crash-worthy, dual-airbagged,
smog-lite 1994 Impala SS just a second behind its dirty, unsafe,
3750-pound SS 409 progenitor. And the V-8 growl that sounds as
lusty as a big-block with dual quads.
By living up to the standards set by the legendary Super Sport
Chevys of the 1960s, the Impala SS represents a new type of "retro"
niche vehicle.
