The Mercedes-Benz SL series started out as the top of the line sports luxury tourer that offered both performance and comfort. Produced from 1971 all the way to 1989, the R107 lived a long and cherished life. The United States was an extremely popular market for the personal luxury coupe and almost ? of all SL's were sold here. Unfortunately, US regulations mandated big bumpers, low power headlights, and emission choked engines. European market examples were faster and looked better, and they are much more valuable than US models
GR Auto Gallery is pleased to present this excellent 1980 450SL for you consideration. This European model was built in 1980 and was imported to the United States shortly after. US market headlights were fitted, but the slim euro bumpers were retained. 14in BBS wheels are period correct and look the part. The 4.5L V8 engine is free of emission controls and is said to produce 225hp and 278lb-ft, which was nearly the same amount of power as the larger US market 560SL model. Manual climate control and Becker Mexico stereo are other euro features that work well. The silver metallic paint and chrome trim are in excellent shape and the black leather interior is in great shape with a minor bit of wear on the seats. The factory matching hardtop fits well put has a few small stains on the head liner. The power windows work well and the car is also equipped with power steering, power disc brakes, independent rear suspension and more. The car was purchased as a summer cruiser from a family that had owned the car for over 20 years previously and the car is in excellent mechanical and driving shape. A new exhaust system was installed and the hardtop and soft top are in great shape. The car also has a car cover and rolling cart for the hardtop. An excellent euro car that is ready to roll!
