For many Chevy enthusiasts of a certain vintage, this 1961 Chevrolet Bel Air represents the ideal early sixties musclecar: a plain-Jane two-door post coupe, easy on the creature-comfort side of the option list, but when it comes to under the hood, that's where you sharpen your pencil. Check off the boxes marked “409 cu in 360 hp”, “4-speed manual” and “4.56:1” and you are done; so, too, is the competition.
The $90,000 restoration of this “street cleaner” 409 4-speed was based on a solid rust-free two-door Bel Air. The body has been thoroughly renewed and expertly layered in Tuxedo Black, while along with a rare one piece bumper, the nominal exterior finishing trim pieces are NOS. The Grey interior is also finished in low key fashion, with only a period correct column-mounted Sun tach to compliment the speedometer, fuel and temperature gauges, perfect company for the radio-delete dash and floor-mounted factory shifter. The overall level of finish is hard to express; suffice it to say that it is no surprise this concours-quality showpiece was invited to the 2008 Meadow Brook Concours D'Elegance.
Like the rest of this showpiece, the engine room is spotless and completely correct. Behind the 360-horsepower 409 is a four speed feeding a strip-ready 4.56:1 Posi rear end, making this one ready for competition.
Racing or not, this clean, mean two-door post 409 is a thing of beauty.
