A collector’s dream!
The Maserati Ghibli was introduced at the Turin Auto Show in
1966 as a replacement for the Mistral. Ghibli is an Arabian word
referring to a hot, dry wind in the Sahara desert. First penned by
a young Giorgetto Giugiaro while he was working for Carrozzeria
Ghia, the motorcar was free of the safety restrictions that would
plague automotive designers later in the 1970’s. The Ghibli’s shape
was hailed as being ahead of its time with its firm, straight
surfaces. Giugiaro’s intention was to showcase the large front
mounted engine with its long, wedge-shaped front end which was
highlighted by an integrated front bumper, pop-up headlamps and a
slanted hood that lead to a curved roofline with a short tail. The
design almost instantly earned praise from throughout the
automotive industry, especially Car and Driver magazine who, in
1968, referred to it as a “gorgeous” design. The frame that held
the Ghibli’s stunning appearance was a strengthened version of the
Mexico and 3500 chassis, utilizing the same well-tuned suspension
that had previously made Maserati a household name on race tracks
across the globe. Power was derived from a 4.7 liter dual overhead
cam V8 fed by four Weber DCNL carburetors that delivered over 300
horsepower. Dry sump lubrication further enhanced the V8’s
performance and meant that the 4.7 liter was great for torque at
lower revs verses the high revving V12 engines of Ferrari and
Lamborghini at the time. Only 1,170 Ghiblis were produced from 1967
to 1973 as their excellent combination of quality and performance
was reserved for only the most discerning customers. Factory
options were available with only a handful of Ghiblis leaving Italy
with the 3-speed Borg Warner automatic gearbox that allowed the
auto to swing effortlessly through traffic. During the period of
its production, the Ghibli was praised for its excellent
combination of style and performance. Today, they are rarely seen
except in some of the world’s most premier collections.
