The Tipo AM 116 Indy was named in honor of Maserati's 1939 and 1940
wins at Indianapolis and was designed as a four-seat touring
alternative to the Ghibli. Penned by Giovanni Michelotti for
Vignale, the Indy first appeared on Vignale's stand at the 1968
Turin Motor Show and was officially launched at the Geneva Salon in
1969. The wedge-shaped body featured unitary construction, a first
for Maserati.
This particular car, chassis no. 1228 was completed early October
1971 by Officine A. Maserati S.p.A., finished in Marrone Colorado
over white Connoly leather and sold new locally to Modena, Italy.
It later made its way to the States, where the Indy was purchased
in 1994 from Continental Classic Motors in Hinsdale, Illinois under
its caretaker, the Maserati received a freshening to the current
blue sometime in the late 1990s. A change of ownership occurred in
2002 by another Maserati collector in Illinois, who drove the car
regularly until 2010. Changing hands once more in 2015.
1228 has since received a complete service with a carburetor tune,
filter, fluids, clutch master and slave cylinders, new plugs,
restored factory wheels with new Vredestein Sprint Classics.
Maserati S.p.A. of Modena confirms with original Certificate of
Origin that the chassis and engine are matching as it left the
factory. Additional Classiche documents include: Final Tests data
Sheet, Internal Factory Order, Technical & Aesthetic
Characteristics, End of Line Data Sheet and Delivery Note. This
particular Maserati is sure to satisfy the true driver-collector
connoisseur and complete with factory jack in vinyl pouch and
matching full-size spare wheel. The Indy represents incredible
value for Italian sports car collectors and enthusiasts alike.
