Vehicle Description
This 1948 Studebaker Champion Starlight Coupe, finished in
mile-deep Black over an outstanding interior upholstered in
two-tone Grey, is a fabulous example of the late 40's/early '50s
'Jet-Age' styling. The product of a comprehensive restoration, with
over $24k invested (receipts accompany car), it's an absolutely
gorgeous and rare piece of American automobile history. Powered by
a 169.9 cubic-inch 6-cylinder engine factory rated at 102hp.
3-speed column-shift manual trans. New motor and transmission with
overdrive. New Ford Hi-Speed rear end. Perfect headliner, sparkling
dash, excellent stainless and chrome. Great glass, weather
stripping, felts, rubber and tires. The paint is in great
condition. The engine runs smooth and, paired with a 3-speed manual
transmission with overdrive, is able to keep up with modern
traffic. The wide white wall tires are in great shape. The cloth
upholstery and carpet looks great. All the glass is in great
condition without any cracks or stars. This Studebaker looks, runs,
handles and maneuvers great, is a true pleasure to drive and will
be a handsome addition to any collection. The Champion Starlight
Coupe was a unique 2-door body style offered by Studebaker
Corporation of South Bend, Indiana from 1947 to 1952. The
Studebaker Champion Starlight coupe attracted motorists with its
ultramodern styling -- the aerospace industry was a fascination for
the country during the space race and influenced automotive design
heavily during that time. The car has one of the more interesting
greenhouse areas of any automobile ever and has a lot of eye
appeal. The most striking feature is the great expanse of the
wrap-around 4-piece rear window. Like many postwar designs inspired
by the aircraft used in World War II, Virgil Exner was apparently
impressed by the windshield and roof line used on some of the
larger Boeing and Douglas aircraft used before and during the war.
Instead of placing it at the front of the car, he used it for the
back half of the roof and added curved instead of flat paneled
glass sections. The design leadership was matched with
comparatively up-to-the-minute engineering to make it more than
worthy of contemporary consideration. Was there anything more
modern on the road back then? Not really. The Virgil Exner-penned
Studebaker line was sleek and instantly dated everything else on
Detroit's showroom floors. The car's unique profile provided the
Studebaker marque with an easily recognized body shape copied as
soon as possible by the other US manufacturers in their 1949
models. For 1950 and 1951, all Studebakers received a freshening of
the 1947 design with the addition of the "bullet nose" (sometimes
referred to as the "spinner" front) front sheet metal; when
combined with the Starlight body style, Studebakers looked
comparatively futuristic at the time. For more information or to
