1968 Ford Mustang GT/CS (California Special) in St. Louis, Missouri
Very rare Mustang GT/ California Special factory equipped with a
390ci V8 and 4-speed transmission! Highly favored 1968 color
correct Highland Green over Black with power disc brakes, front
seat headrests, 14" Styled Steel wheels, and more! A Mustang
collectors dream come true!! The Mustang GT California Special is a
very special car indeed. Built in limited quantities for Ford
dealers in California only, with a few examples sold in Oregon, the
cars immediate popularity exhausted supplies. What makes the GT/CS
different from other Mustangs and Shelby's are fiberglass trunk lid
and quarter extensions from a 1968 Shelby Convertible,1965
Thunderbird tail lights, pop-off gas cap, fiberglass side scoops
,chrome quarter panel script (GT/CS only), unique body striping,
blacked out front grille, fog lights (Marchal or Lucas), and
quarter turn hood locks. Only coupes where used, no convertibles or
fastbacks built. Any regular Mustang engine, option, or color was
available and all where built at the San Jose plant in California.
The St. Louis Car Museum is very proud to present this magnificent
piece of history. The 1968 Mustang GT/CS has just recently been
through a no expensed spared, rotisserie restoration. Finished in
code-correct Highland Green with Black vinyl interior, and
accompanied by a Deluxe Marti Report. Powered comes from the S-code
390ci V8 and 4-speed wide-ratio manual transmission, fitted with
power disc brakes, rare front seat headrests, 3.25 conventional
rear axle ratio, Philco AM radio, and GT Equipment Group. Other
options on this vehicle include chrome 14" styled steel wheels
wrapped in BF Goodrich Radial T/A white letter tires, chrome engine
dress up kit, tinted glass, foot pedal operated windshield washer,
and deluxe seatbelts. This Mustang has undergone a complete nut &
bolt restoration with virtually everything stripped, restored,
replaced, or refurbished. The chassis and body were fully media
blasted and refinished to better than factory appearance, with the
underside beautifully detailed with red oxide primer, factory
inspection markings, all seams and spots welds perfectly visible,
and absolutely no rust visible or unsightly patchwork. The date
code correct engine and transmission have been fully overhauled,
and equally detailed to show worthy appearance with factory
stickers, FOMOCO branded parts, and original specification
components. It retains original Carlite/Ford window glass, factory
body tags and Lucas fog lamps with original covers, original
California smog equipment, and more! It would take too long to list
all the new parts on this wonderful example in this description, so
we elected to provide ample pictures to help us show everything as
best as possible. It will come complete with Marti Auto Works
Deluxe Report documenting this as a rare, factory big block
GT/California Special with 4-speed manual making it a very
difficult car to find, as most were built as 289ci automatics! It
sincerely couldn't be more ready to show and enjoy having all new
fuel system from the gas tank forward, all new suspension
components, all new H-pipe exhaust system with resonators, fully
rebuilt braking system with fresh calipers, hard & soft lines,
e-brake components, and complete wiring harnesses front to back! It
is well sorted, recently fully aligned, and ready to hit the road!
