built solid, dependable bikes all through the war effort. Their
simply look may have overshadowed the refined engineering
underneath. By 1960, the US market and fully adapted to import
motorcycles from all over the world, which included Japanize
models. The BMW team jumped into the "sport bike" field with the
R-Series in 1955, but increased the horsepower by 20% with the
R69/S produced from 1960-1969. This high compression 590cc opposed
boxer twin engines now produced 42 horsepower! When tested by
Cycle World magazine, they were quoted stating "the smoothest, best
finished, quietest and cleanest motorcycle they've ever enjoyed
riding. It would be their choice for a perfect vacation/tour
bike." The legacy of BMW engineering one of the best motorcycles
in the world continues yet today. We are very pleased to offer this
1962 BMW R69/S recently restored by Airhead Restorations in
Buffalo, NY who specializes in vintage 1952-1969 BMW motorcycles.
Upon delivery to them from a previous owner, they had the task of
completing a total ground up restoration ensuring it to be in
factory specifications. This included completely dismantling the
frame, swing arms, Earles front fork, and assorted parts to be
stripped to bare metal before being painted in zinc primer and
baked, then fully powder coated. The original, number matching
engine was already fully rebuilt, so the Bing carburetors (1/26/69
& 1/26/70) where fully disassembled, cleaned, fitted with new jets
& floats, and rebuilt all new seals and gaskets. The transmission
received equal treatment with a complete media blast of the case,
fully cleaned before receiving new bearings, seals, and gaskets.
The gears where in perfect condition and retained. The case then
received a fresh coat of Eastwood clear satin finish to protect
it. The wheel hubs were also dismantled, blasted, and coated with
the same Eastwood satin protectant. The Weinmann rims were, along
with all parts needing polishing, were sent to Barnes Finishing for
polishing. The wheels were reassembled with new bearings, seals,
and all new stainless spokes. They are trued with proper offset
along with fresh tubes and Heidenan 3.50-18 classic tires, both
fully balanced. The painting of the fenders and tank were completed
by Mark Weld along with his famous hand laid pin stripping. An all
new wiring is installed through this R69/S from the late Robert Van
Vliet, along with new cables. Pictures of the restoration are
included with the sale. Some nice touches to this particular
example include Albert headlight mirrors with BMW accent emblems,
headlight protection trim, Pagusa seat, Hella hand bar turn
signals, and rare scrambler high pipes exhaust system. Like the
other stunning 1971 BMW we have listed on the website, this example
hails from the Ray Lamontagne collection. He purchased this bike
in May 2016 with a fresh 2 miles on the odometer and has since
added only 69 careful miles for a total of 71 miles showing today.
It remains very impressive, show & ride ready, and a testament to a
BMW culture who wishes to keep them on the road! Please call with
any additional questions or secure it by credit card. Thank s for
looking!
