Vehicle Description
The Volkswagen thing was spawned by a German runabout military
vehicle known as the "Kubelwagen"...Kubel meaning "bucket" and
Wagen meaning "Car". A name, which is quite fitting for the design.
The Thing was only called "The Thing" in North America where it
went on sale in 1973; elsewhere it was known as the Trekker, the
Safari or simply Type 181. Spartan by design, the Thing became
quite popular in the US market as it appealed especially to the
youth. The thing cost only $3150.00 dollars making it affordable to
the American public. To this day, the quirky Thing, is recognizable
and popular among motoring enthusiasts.
The 1974 Volkswagen Thing offered for sale has had over $4,000 of
service work done to it. The ball joints and tie rods, steering
gearbox and steering dampener, have all been replaced. The cv
joints are freshly packed and has new boots. The shift rod bushing
was replaced, the rear wheel bearings have just been packed, the
shocks have been replaced, all brake hoses, turn and adjust rear
brakes. The work was performed by German Motor Works in
California.
The car presents well in white with a blue and white vinyl interior
and has a bit of an Acapulco look. The Thing fires right up and
handles as it should. The VW Thing is a proven vehicle. Their
uniqueness, simplicity and utility have fallen into favor among
auto enthusiasts and collectors alike. This is a great vehicle for
investment or to keep at a seasonal home. No wrong decision
here.
