Vehicle Description
The 1950 MG TD combined the TC's drivetrain, a modified
hypoid-geared rear axle, the MG Y-Type chassis, a familiar T-Type
style body and independent suspension using coil springs from the
MG Y-Type Saloon. Also new; the rack and pinion steering, smaller
15-inch disc type road wheels, a lefthand drive option and standard
equipment bumpers with over-riders. The car was five inches wider
with a track of 50 inches. In 1950, the TD Mk. II was introduced
alongside the standard car, featuring a more highly tuned engine
with 8.0:1 compression ratio giving 57bhp at 5500rpm. It featured
twin fuel pumps, revised dampers, and a higher rear-axle ratio.
Nearly 30,000 MG TD's have been produced, including some 1,700 Mk.
II models. When the series ended in 1953, all but 1,656 were
exported with 23,488 of them to the United States. An example
tested by 'The Motor' magazine in 1952 had a top speed of 77mph and
could accelerate from 0-60 mph in 18.2 seconds. Originally coming
to us via the warm climate of southern California this example is
in simply wonderful condition. It has been owned by the vendor
since 2000 and competed in the London to Istanbul challenge.
Details of the challenge can be found in the history file and the
competitor sticker is still attached to the windshield. Number 33
in the starting order, this MG completed the 20,000 mile, 80 day
challenge driven by a father and son duo; testament to the prior
restoration that had taken place before their ownership. Today the
car presents every bit as well and would likely take on the
challenge all over again should a buyer wish, subject to a little
preparation of course. Presented in Old English White with
contrasting red trim and a near new hood, we believe this to be one
of the best on the market which would simply be a joy to own or
perhaps even tour in the future. For sale by auction on Saturday 23
September 2017 with Historics at Brooklands, Brooklands Motor
Racing Circuit, Weybridge, Surrey, Call 01753 639170
