1962 Renault Galion 'Ferrari Transporter' in Weybridge,
The Renault Galion had a 2.5-tonne carrying capacity and was built
between 1947 and 1957 and then by its subsidiary Saviem between
1957 and 1965. The new vehicle was produced at Renault's main plant
in Boulougne-Billancourt. By 1961, Saviem was producing between 50
and 60 Galions per day and, at the time, they were offered with at
least two inline-four engines: the three-litre diesel supplied by
Perkins and a two-litre petrol Renault unit with a maximum power
output of 56bhp at 3,300rpm. The truck had a rear-wheel drive
transmission through a universal joint coupled to a four-speed
manual gearbox with a single-disc manually-operated clutch. The
suspension was made of leaf springs on both axles, with hydraulic
dampers. The steering was a recirculating ball type. This lefthand
drive Galion has recently been mechanically and bodily restored at
great expense to its current fabulous Ferrari livery with new
seats, brakes and radiator. We are advised that this was the
personal transport of Enzo Ferrari himself and, when he graduated
into more sporting motorcars, his mother used it to visit relations
in the greater Maranello area. On a more serious note, it was
imported into this country in 2014 by specialists H-Van World and
restored from top to bottom in the hand-painted livery you see
here. It is a pick-up variant with folding sides and rear sections.
Supplied with a book detailing many journeys and servicing works
undertaken in its previous life, it would make an excellent
addition to a Ferrari collection and a focal point to any show. For
sale by auction on Saturday 23 September 2017 with Historics at
Brooklands, Brooklands Motor Racing Circuit, Weybridge, Surrey,
