The Model - General Motors has built its reputation of performance
and even with restrictions placed on passenger car related to
emissions, fuel consumption, safety and to some degree, design,
they have continued to produce vehicles that make the heart beat
faster. After the success of the Syclone pickups, the go-ahead was
given to develop a Jimmy based high-performance SUV. The S-15 based
Jimmy was the perfect starting point in that it shared so many
components with the Sonoma base pickups. The optional 4.3L OHV V6
served as the base for the Typhoon starting with a freer flowing
intake manifold from the LB4 V6 and pushing the fuel was the
Mitsubishi TD06-17C/8 cm2 turbocharger working with the Garrett
intercooler, attached to a 48mm twin-bor throttle body taken from
the 5.7L V8. As with the Syclone, the only transmission available
was the 700R4 automatic attached to the Borg-Warner 4472 trans case
that sends 35% of the torque to the front wheels and 65% to the
rear. Modifications were made to the stock suspension, brakes were
upgraded and a very subtle use of model identification finished off
this super package. With the performance and handling of a sports
car, the Typhoon was unlike any other SUV ever produced.
The Car - In production for just two model years, 1993 would see
production limited to 2,200. These SUV's were available in a wide
selection of color with one of the most popular choices featuring a
black exterior with black leather seats. This example has seen been
enjoyed and close inspection will reveal signs of road use.
However, this Typhoon has always been well maintained and retains
much of its original splendor and all of its performance. There
have been no modifications to this sporty vehicle as it retains its
factory alloy wheels, full interior including the entertainment
system, and exterior appearance. Driving and enjoying a performance
vehicle such as this Typhoon is what car-collecting and
experiencing is all about and this vehicle is ready to provide
those pleasures of motoring. When new several celebrities owned a
Typhoon such as Clint Eastwood and the late John F. Kennedy Jr.
Even if you are not a celebrity, you can own this limited
production Typhoon with the simple raising of your hand.
