Toyota Trucks are known around the world for being some of the
toughest and most durable vehicles you can buy. The Hilux was the
precurser to the Tacoma and is widely used around the world for its
reliability, payload and off road ability. There is a segment of
the BBC's TopGear that is dedicated to the durability of these
trucks and shows the truck under water, on fire and crumpled but
still running. Building off of the success and legacy of the Hilux,
Toyota USA introduced the Tacoma in 1995 that was catered to the
North American market. With a greater focus on comfort and on-road
ability, and a range of four and six cylinder engines, the midsize
Tacoma became an instant success.
This 2002 Tacoma is a first generation model that has benefitted
from the earlier facelift. With the 3.4L V6 engine that made 190hp
and 220 lb-ft and is mated to an automatic transmission with Hi and
Lo ranges. The higher level SR5 trim means that this is a well
equipped truck with cruise control, air conditioning, power
windows, power locks, upmarket stereo, power mirrors, keyless entry
and cloth interior. And being a Toyota, everything works just like
it did the way it left the factory. The engine fires up right away
and pulls strong through the smooth automatic. The low ranges seem
to work as intended as well and the truck goes down the road well.
Newer Hankook tires are mounted on factory 16in wheels. The truck
has a color matched bed cap that is well installed. While this is
far from a perfect example, with many marks and scrapes on the
body, this one owner truck has been well maintained by its owner
and will continue to be a solid workhorse for its next owner.
