As part of Chrysler’s “Suddenly it’s 1960” ad campaign the
Imperial had a stunning new look. The exaggerated styling was
influenced by the chrome V-shaped bumper, quad headlamps with
furrowed brows, and tall rear fins with bullet style tail lamps.
The interior of the 1960 models was given some special touches as
well as being lavishly appointed. The dash instrumentation was
fixed around two large gauge panels with controls mounted nearby
that gave the driver complete control with limited movement of the
hands and eyes. 1960 was also the first year for Panelescent Light
for the instrument illumination. Developed by Sylvania for
Chrysler, Panelescent Light emitted a slight green hue on across
the dash that was easier on the eyes than the more traditional
method of using bulbs. 350 horsepower was produced by the 413ci V8
engine while Chrysler’s torsion bar suspension provided a safe ride
with adequate suspension. The combination of style, performance and
comfort made the 1960 Imperial stand out like no other when it
rolled into showrooms across the country and today remains one of
the most coveted classic Mopars in both collector and enthusiast
circles.
