Just Like Being in the Showroom in 1947!
This 1947 Frazer Manhattan is so nicely restored that it could be a new one standing in the showroom 70 years ago. This car has been fully restored from the hood ornament to the tail lights and everything in between. The Manhattan's design by Howard “Dutch” Darrin won the Fashion Academy of New York Gold Medal when first introduced in 1946. You simply won’t find a nicer example of this rare marque.
Excellent Cosmetics
As part of the restoration, the Manhattan was resprayed in what appears to be the Lambswool Cream and Hickory Brown color combination, and the paint looks as fresh today as it did when built. The car is virtually free of chips and scratches, having been continuously garaged since its restoration. The chrome and trim is in excellent condition as is the glass.
The interior is re-finished in Chocolate Brown fabric that looks brand new. The carpeting and door panels are all in excellent condition as well. All of the original gauges and controls look as nice as they did when new. The dash and controls have a distinctly art deco look that add the perfect finishing touches to this vehicle.
Strong Mechanicals
Frazer used the Continental Red Seal 226 cid “Supersonic” L-head straight six engine to power the Manhattan. The engine produced approximately 115 hp and would allow the car to move effortlessly through in-town traffic and operate at highway speeds.
The column-mounted three-speed manual transmission shifts effortlessly and quietly through the gears. This car was also built with overdrive. The transmission shifts smoothly without grinding or chattering.
Comfort and Safety and Equipment
The Manhattan was a luxurious car as is attested to by the excellent upholstery and the neat design of the interior. Don’t be confused by the picture that shows the under-dash box with an “air conditioning” sticker—it is a heater box. Apparently Frazer considered heating the air “conditioning”! The gauges and much of the safety equipment work properly; some of the lights and the wipers will require attention.
They Don’t Get Much Nicer
It is hard to imagine a Frazer Manhattan restored to a higher level than this one. There was no expense spared in restoring this vehicle and that is apparent when you see the car. It runs and drives correctly and is sure to be noticed by everyone due to the rarity of this manufacturer and model.
