This 1987 Rolls-Royce Silver Spur I was commissioned by the British
Foreign Office for use as part of the British Embassy vehicle pool
in Washington D.C. The car was used primarily to transport
dignitaries including Princess Diana. The vehicle was up-armored by
S. MacNeillie & Son, Ltd. in Walsall, UK. Improvements to the car
included laminated polycarbonate in place of glass, Kevlar and
steel plate in the body, two Motorola telephones, and an exterior
telecom (the windows do not roll down). The car is reported to have
traveled 60,300 miles and features a working sunroof as well as air
conditioning.
Princess Diana used this 1987 Rolls-Royce Silver Spur I on two
occasions. The first, on October 4, 1990 attending the Royal Gala
Evening to benefit the London City Ballet at Department of Commerce
in Washington D.C. The second, on October 5, 1990 when Princess
Diana made her historic visit to Grandma's House in Washington
D.C., a home for HIV positive children. Photos of her visit to
Grandma's House can be seen in the gallery above.
