For Sale at Auction: 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SL in Monterey, California

Vehicle Description

Vehicle to be offered for Auction sale August 17th - 19th, 2017 at Russo and Steele's 17th Annual Monterey, California Auction. Please contact us for more information. The Mercedes-Benz W 113 or 280SL was introduced at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show. It was produced from 1963 through 1971 and it replaced both the legendary 300 SL and the 190 SL. Of the 48,912 280 SL's produced, 19,440 were sold in the US. All models were equipped with an inline six-cylinder engine with multi-port fuel injection. The bonnet, trunk lid, door skins and tonneau cover were made of aluminum to reduce weight. The comparatively short and wide chassis, combined with an excellent suspension, powerful brakes and radial tires gave the 280SL superb handling for the era. The 280 SL was called the "Pagoda" because the optional removable hardtop had a thin, slightly concave center panel bracketed on both sides by two thick pillars. It was designed to fortify the roof but proved to be an attractive styling feature. Offered is a very desirable Mercedes-Benz 280SL "Pagoda" from a Virginia Collector. This car has been stored and maintained in museum quality in a collector's garage since its purchase 3 years ago. It is a great example of Mercedes-Benz's last completely hand-made car. It is an extremely low mileage car showing 22,775 miles. It is powered by a 180 horsepower, 2,778 cc OHC six-cylinder engine with Bosch fuel-injection and a four-speed automatic transmission. It has independent front suspension with coil springs and unequal A-arms, independent rear suspension with low-pivot swing axles, trailing arms and coil springs. It also has four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes. This 280 SL wears its original code #304 Horizon Blue exterior paint, matching Horizon Blue hubcaps and original code #744 Midnight Blue convertible top. The beautiful Mercedes-Benz interior in showroom condition. It comes with its original owner's manual, tool kit, spare tire and Becker radio. This car has all of the most desirable options including the Pagoda Hardtop with Stand (+$4500 value), Factory Frigiking Air Conditioning (+15% value), 4-speed transmission (+10% value) and power steering. The engine starts immediately and performs to factory specifications. The 4-speed transmission shifts smoothly and is responsive and nimble. The body is in excellent condition with the original metal that has never suffered an accident. The undercarriage and engine bay are in the same condition: original, solid, but not detailed for show. Obviously, it has never seen inclement weather where salt was a factor and the floors, rockers, and other structural members are 100% intact and in excellent condition.
