When a truck was a truck—1937 GMC Pickup
All one needs to do is lift the steel hood on this fully restored 1937 General Motors Truck (GMC) to know that 70 years ago they made sturdy workhorses that tradespeople were able to rely on. The full restoration resulted in great cosmetics and mechanical reliability.
The 1937 GM pickup was designed by the famed Harley Earl’s Art & Colour Department, the pioneering design studio. The ’37 featured a whole new look from the ’36 and vaulted GMs pickups into the forefront of the small truck marketplace. This is a design that has great appeal among collectors 7 decades later.

Excellent from Top to Bottom
The high-quality re-paint of this pickup makes it look every bit as nice it did when the car hit the dealership in 1937. The very attractive Tan and Forest Green color combination makes this truck one that is sure to stand out at a car show/cruise-in or at your local Home Depot.
The extensive chrome work is exquisite—both in quality of the restoration but also in look. The design of the grill is a work of art in itself.
All of the windows are in good condition and operate correctly, with only a crack in the lower corner of the passenger side door glass. This truck also has a crank to open out the bottom of the windshield for more ventilation on hot days (1930’s air conditioning!).
The body of the truck is free of any apparent rust issues, and an examination of the underside shows it to be similarly clean of corrosion. In fact, the underside of the truck is clean enough to be “show ready”.
The only modification of note was the substitution of fiberglass rear fenders to replace the original which could not be repaired.
The bed of the truck is fully restored with new wood that looks as show-room fresh.
The brown vinyl interior looks like new, and as one would expect, the upholstery is free of rips, holes or separations.
The headliner is in great condition and the painted dash and doors’ interior are excellent.
The gauges all appear to work properly as do the lights and horn. The speedometer likewise works properly.
The rebuilt in-line L-head straight 6 cylinder engine starts right up and runs smoothly. The 229.7 cid with 86 hp provides all the power this vehicle will ever need.
The rebuilt manual transmission has the floor-mounted shifter with 4 forward speeds. These were non-synchromesh units, and it shifts properly
The brakes on the pickup work properly and bring the vehicle to a stop in a safe manner. The 4 6.50 – 16 Silvertown tires have virtually all of their tread remaining.

There is one word that can describe this restored General Motors Truck pickup: WOW! Most of these workhorses were put out to pasture long ago, so this frame-off restored example is a rarity.
