Vehicle Description
1991 Chevrolet Camaro Z28
Chevrolet terminated its support for the International Race Of
Champion races series, (IROC), at the end of 1990, so production of
the Camaros ended early and the new 1991 Camaro was launched much
earlier in the year than normal. The Camaro Z28 name was also
revived to replace the IROC-Z. The four 1991 Camaro models were the
RS coupe and convertible and the Z28 coupe and convertible. In all,
100,838 Camaros were built, with 31,722 V6-powered and 69,116 with
V8s. All 1991 Camaros had new ground-effects packages. The Z28 had
a taller rear spoiler, while the RS coupe maintained the 1990
design, both with the central brake light behind the rear hatch.
Convertibles kept the same spoiler as 1990, and the brake light was
integral. The Camaro RS coupe was offered with the base 140hp V6
engine and 79,854 were sold starting at $12,180. Only 5,329 RS
convertibles were built with 170hp V8 engines starting at $17,960.
A total of 12,452 Z28 Coupes were built starting at $15,445, but
only 3,203 Z28s were built as convertibles starting at $20,815. One
V8 engine was available as an upgrade to the RS coupe and 53,040
shoppers opted to pay an extra $350 for the 170hp 305ci V-8 in the
RS coupe and convertible. The 205hp 305ci V8 was standard in the
Z28 and not available in the RS. A further 6,080 Z28 coupe
customers shelled out $300 for the bigger 245hp 350ci V8. A 5-speed
manual gearbox was offered as the base transmission, but 85,321
customers decided to spend an extra $515 for a 4-speed overdrive
automatic transmission.
For consignment, a 37,146 title verified actual mile 1991 version
of the Camaro Z28 complete with its silver bowtie designation. Yup
it's a shower a goer, and a fun driver, but always put away in the
garage after a cruise like a favorite toy in the box. Sinister
black, plenty of aero fairings on the lower body, removable smoked
glass T-tops, and a small tasteful silver badging adding some
highlight to this otherwise monotone but stunning car.
Exterior
A long front hood is extended even longer with the pointed front
neoprene crash bumper, dual horizontal rectangular inset headlights
and the v shaped grille with a low ground effects spoiler. Small
bump up scoops on the hood. black trimmings for the glass and
rocker fairings with some inlets near the rear wheel well add to
the low aero look. A curved greenhouse like glass is for the
sloping rear and it ends up into a 4 pedestal stand off spoiler
which frames wraparound trio lighting and an erroneous 5.7 Liter
Tuned Port Injectionand Z28 bowtie badged bumper, all painted in
fear inducing black which is the diving board end of the pool
(ie.deeeeep!). 16-inch machined cast rally wheels are wrapped in
like new Firestone blackwall tires all around.
Interior
A swing of the classic long doors and we are met with gray padded
tweed broadcloth, a black plastic panel with the door actuator and
power lock button. A sleek molded gray armrest/door pull is
attached, and some gray carpeting is just below finishing off the
door panels. Inside more tweed broadcloth in gray which matched the
panels of the doors, along with some smooth gray inserts make up
the pattern for the front buckets which are high back and have
headrests. These are very clean as are the rear 2 plus 2 seats in
the same pattern and color way with the hump dividing the two seats
which share a common seat back. If you look real close, you'll see
just slight wear on the outside bolster on the driver's seat. A
black console races through the buckets to the dash and houses a
storage box /armrest, window toggles and rear glass/deck switch
release. The shift lever is here and as our eyes climb to the
center of the dash, we see a Sony AM/FM/Cassette radio within and
temperature controls. The dash which is very clean has eye grabbing
black faced gauges with yellow numerals and yellow pointers. Not
even a speck of dust is noted here. Carpet is gray, and clean, as
is the upper headliner, while clean is sagged and heavilywrinkled.
A shout out to the rear storage area that opens up from the B
pillar rearward and offers up two-tiered storage compartments and
is also lined with very clean gray carpeting and the factory
privacy shade. The rear seat side panel also doubles as the speaker
holder.
Drivetrain
Let's lift the hood, and here we can see a factory correct, very
well cared for, and with the easy miles as expected, near showroom
condition engine. Within the confines of the engine bay is a 305ci
V8 which is fed by Tuned Port EFI and has a 700R4 4-speed automatic
transmission on back. A 10-bolt rear is reserved for the axle.
Excuse me whilst I eat my lunch off the top of the intake
manifold!
Undercarriage
Slight surface rust on some of the usual suspects, but certainly
all unremarkable. Black undercoating drenches nearly every surface
including the flooring, unibody and rockers and shows with some
minor road dirt. Upfront independent suspension with coil springs
and for the back a torque arm setup with coil springs. Power disc
brakes are on front, and power drums are reserved for the rear and
the factory single exhaust with dual tail pipes handled the
exhale.
Drive-Ability
This car fired right up and was eager to get on the test track.
Here it performed like I was out of the showroom and on my test
drive from the dealership. All encompassing power, smooth automatic
shifting, and bias free panic stopping. I noticed the AC was
blowing cool but not cold and this flaw was backed up by hearing
the AC compressor cycle on and off.
Essentially a sports car with a roomy greenhouse glass hatchback,
all in racy low mileage Camaro Z28 trim. A beautifully preserved
interior, and perfectly aligned steel panels all bathed in that
wonderful eye catching black paint. I'm hungry for a Mustang, who's
in?!
