The first-generation BMW 1 Series is a small family car produced by
the German automaker BMW since 2004, when it replaced the BMW 3
Series Compact range as the smallest and cheapest vehicle
(depending on the engine model) in the BMW range. As of May 2013,
the 3-door hatchback (model code E81) and 5-door hatchback (E87)
have been superseded by the F20 and F21 models; the 2-door coupe
(E82) and the two-door convertible (E88) have been superseded by
the new BMW 2 Series. The BMW N54 is a direct injection
turbocharged straight-6 DOHC engine which began production in 2006
and presently (2015) remains in production in the E89 Z4 sDrive
35is. It debuted at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show and was launched in
late 2006 in the E92 335i. The N54 began to be phased out following
the introduction of the N55 in 2009. The N54 has won five straight
International Engine of the Year awards, and three straight Ward's
10 Best Engines awards.
