Vehicle Description
The Volkswagen thing was spawned by a German runabout military
vehicle known as the "Kubelwagen"...Kubel meaning "bucket" and
Wagen meaning "Car". A name, which is quite fitting for the design.
The Thing was only called "The Thing" in North America where it
want on sale in 1973; elsewhere it was known as the Trekker, the
Safari or simply Type 181. Spartan by design, the Thing became
quite popular in the US market as it appealed especially to the
youth. The thing cost only $3150.00 dollars making it affordable to
the American public. To this day, the quirky Thing, is recognizable
and popular among motoring enthusiasts.
Just in time for summer fun, GR Auto Gallery is pleased to present
this highly restored 1974 VW Thing for all to consider. This Thing
is in quite remarkable condition finished in Kansas Beige with
Charcoal interior upholstery. It is powered by its 1600cc rear
mounted, air / oil cooled engine, 4 speed transmission and rear
wheel drive. Highlights included new soft top with side curtains,
new seats, new rubber floors, new exhaust, aluminum wheels, full
size spare, Pioneer sound, etc. Today, this Thing is excellent in
all areas. Mechanically, this Thing is spot on and a proven
driver.
If you are in the market for a unique yet reliable vehicle, look no
further than "The Thing". Its SUV curb appeal with added
convertible features makes it a perfect vehicle for the cottage,
cruise to the beach or soak in some rays while cruising the strip.
It starts on command and is a pure pleasure to drive. "The Thing"
