1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Recreation in Huntington Station, New York

Vehicle Description

1964 SHELBY COBRA DAYTONA COUPE RECREATION
--Red with White stripes “Scuderia Filipinetti” 1965 Le Mans race livery, 5-speed Richmond gearbox, 2,000 since original build and only 500 miles on engine.

The Cobra Daytona…North America was conquered, but Ferrari still reigned supreme in the FIA World Endurance Championship, run for GT cars. Most championship races where held on high speed tracks where the Cobra with their brick-like aerodynamics was at a disadvantage. To solve this problem, Shelby commission Peter Brock to design a coupe body for the Cobra chassis. Dubbed the Daytona Coupe, the 20 mph faster Cobra made its debut in the 1964 season.

In the 1965 season and its eleven races against its fiercest of competitors Ferrari, the Cobra Daytona Coupe won eight. Today, the Daytona is best remembered for the two consecutive GT class victories in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in ’64 and ’65. In these four seasons, the Cobra built up and impressive racing records on both sides of the Atlantic. Only six examples of the Daytona Coupe were constructed making it one of the most sought after vehicles in the world today. This is a faithful replica of the famous Daytona Coupe CSX-2602.

This tribute to CSX-2602’s build specs are as follows…

The chassis includes a 10 point rollcage of 1.5” x 0.120” wall DOM tubing with main rail tubes of 4” diameter of 0.135” and wall thickness, both chassis and rollcage are both powder coated. Power is supplied by a Ford SVO 391 stroker crate motor backed up by a Richmond Gear 5-speed transmission using a 2.88 Posi Salisbury differential. Headers and side pipes are White ceramic coated and are patterned after the original exhaust system.

Front suspension is chrome moly tubular upper and lower A arms that have been polished, dampening is from custom AMP Coil overs. Front brakes are Wilwood Superlite 4-piston calipers with 1.25” x 12” diameter vented rotors. Rear suspension is AMP polished Watts link with braking from Girling inboard mounted 3-piston calipers with SS pistons. Wheels are original style aluminum FIA Halibrand knock off wheels with BF Goodrich tires.

The fuel system is a custom made fuel cell connected to a Barry Grant #280 electric fuel pump. A belly pan with Dzus fasteners has been installed for easy access to fuel cell and electric fuel pump. The all aluminum interior is patterned after the original Daytona using Stewart Warner gauges and R model racing bucket seats with 5-point racing harnesses. Original phosphorous tipped switches add those minute details to this aluminum dashboard. Lighting is from original Lucas fog lamps up front with original plexiglass aero covers and headlamps with authentic marker and directional lights installed and original plexiglass headlight covers. Lastly it is equipped with a Halon fire suppression system.

This replica Daytona Coupe was featured in the January 2003 “Kit Car Magazine”. Due to its authentic look throughout, it was also invited to be on display at the Saratoga Auto Museum in Saratoga, NY. Cost to build this exacting replica today will cost well over $200,000. Similar replicas have been raced in HSR and as well various other USA and European sanctioned events. This Cobra Daytona is registered as a 1964 Ford and is street legal.
