Vehicle Description
1964 Mercury Comet Sedan
Sold on a Bill of Sale Only. It does not have a title.
When people hear the word Caliente they tend to apply the Spanish
meaning of the term to the automobile. Of course, Caliente
translated into English means hot or a description of
attractiveness. When I asked a Spanish speaking neighbor for the
precise meaning of the word, he told me it represents someone who
is promiscuous. When you apply the term to a Mercury Comet it
really describes the top level of trim offered on the automobile.
These cars offered plush deluxe carpeting, chrome body side
moldings and Caliente badging.
For consignment a squared off version of the Comet. This one is in
full Caliente trim, is in fair condition and does run. In search of
a good caregiver who would want to bring this car back from its
years in storage.
Exterior
Starting life as a factory Anniversary Silver painted car, we now
note a Sea Green Respray. Some chips in the paint, as well as
dulling in areas are duly noted. There are also areas of bubbling
and rust through on the front wheel wells. Chrome, Brite-work, and
badging show signs of age with dimpling, pitting and some rust. The
wraparound chrome side panel trim has been replaced by a single
wide strip of white painted interior surrounded by chrome. The rear
"Dixie Cup" taillights have been replaced this year by a single
strip of 3 circular taillights, with less protruding individual
lights. More upscale turbine style wheel covers emblazoned with
MERCURY are on all 4 corners.
Interior
Well preserved all be it smudged, and a little dirty, Red Vinyl
with stitched square tufted panels, and tuck and roll vertical
pleated upper setbacks are seen in front and back. Original red
carpet shows lots of fading and is mostly underneath a rubber
protective mat. The original dash is upfront, and has some wear to
it, as well as deterioration of the plastic in some areas. Windlace
is worn on all 4 doors, and the headliner is still tight above all
the interior and does have some staining. The sun visors are well
worn and are losing their edging.
Drivetrain
A 200ci Inline 6-cylinder engine topped by a 1-barrel carburetor
sits within an unrestored engine bay. A 2-speed Ford-O-Matic
transmission is attached to the rear of the engine. Plenty of
surface rust under here.
Undercarriage
Areas of surface rust, and invasive rust are seen. Some previous
repairs to remediate this rust have been performed, although some
of it has returned.
A car stored for years, now in need of a redux. The trimmings are
there they just need a renewal. This car runs a bit rough and
creaks a bit when you turn it.
