Vehicle Description
JD Classics are delighted to offer this very rare Aston Martin DB4
Series V Vantage, being one of only three which were originally
fitted with an automatic transmission.
The DB4 was introduced in October 1958 and by the time it was
discontinued in 1963 it had evolved considerably with five distinct
series being recognised. The last of these, the Series V, closely
resembled its successor, the DB5, with a 3.5 inch longer wheelbase,
which allowed for increased leg room and boot space, and more cabin
space provided by a higher roof line. It also featured 15 inch
wheels, an electric radiator fan as standard and a DB4GT instrument
panel. With only some 50 cars built in this final incarnation of
the DB4, the Series V has always been a rare and highly desirable
Aston Martin.
The example offered here is an original UK RHD car delivered new in
August 1963 to Mr H Seligman of Buckinghamshire, finished in
Goodwood Green and its rarity is enhanced by the fact that it is
one of only three cars that were fitted with a Borg-Warner
automatic transmission from new. Interestingly the original factory
build sheet reveals several other non-standard features including a
heated rear screen, Vantage Spec, Sundym glass windscreen, a
Motorola radio, which is still fitted to the car, and deletion of
the oil cooler.
Today the car is offered in wonderful condition and drives
fantastically having recently received a comprehensive mechanical
overhaul by noted specialists including the installation of a full
handling kit with front Koni dampers, billet aluminium lever-arm
rear dampers and anti-roll bars. In addition the brakes have been
upgraded with stainless steel pistons in aluminium piston housings
(as per the original Dunlop units) and adjustable electric power
steering has been installed to further complement the driving
experience. As part of the mechanical work a correct four-speed
manual gearbox was fitted, while retaining the original automatic
unit, and a total engine rebuild was undertaken by Aston
Engineering during which time the engine was uprated to 4.2 Litres,
fitted with an unleaded cylinder head and brought up to SS
specification with the fitting of triple carburettors.
Cosmetically the car is delightful and presents wonderfully in its
factory original Goodwood Green. Its well executed detailing is
further epitomised by Turrino wheels and a refined interior that
has been re-trimmed to perfection in Red leather. Importantly the
car also retains its original registration and, being accompanied
by the aforementioned Borg-Warner gearbox, retains full matching
numbers.
A genuine three owner car from new that has always maintained
regardless of cost, this DB4 is supplied with a comprehensive
history file which includes the factory build sheet, service
history from the Aston Martin Works at Newport Pagnell from
1973-1999 and informative correspondence from Aston Martin to the
first two owners. There are also a large number of invoices,
receipts, tax discs and previous MoT certificates from 1973
onwards, which all contribute to this car's fascinating history.
