The Dodge WC57 was a variation on the basic WC52 -ton 4X4 weapons
carrier. The 4X4 WC57 was designed as a lightweight
command/reconnaissance car for cavalry/reconnaissance units. The
Dodge WC57 -ton command car was introduced in 1942 to replace the
WC24 4X4 -ton command car. While the Dodge -ton WC series
vehicles were well built and reliable, tests conducted by the U.S.
Army in 1941 and feedback from the British indicated that the
narrow width and high profile of the WC24 made it prone to tipping
over. In addition, the tires of the -ton WC24 were too narrow to
cope with deep sand and mud. The -ton WC series addressed these
problems with larger tires and a width increased by seven inches.
The WC57 was a popular mount for U.S. Army offices who desired a
mobile vehicle with good off-road capability. Its size also made
the necessary addition of communication equipment easier. This
Dodge WC57 Command Car is reputed to be General Patton's actual
vehicle. It features flags depicting General Patton's rank, custom
armor plating, as well as high volume horns and a siren.
