The Model: When Mercedes unveiled the new 2003 SL500, it was the
darling of the media. While not as fast or potent or expensive as
the SL600 big brother, this model was hailed as being almost
perfection. Let alone the sensuous lines that marked Mercedes'
entire SL line-up, even today these cars are still fitted with
everything a person who enjoys actually driving a car needs.
Engineering advancements is an obsession with the folks from
Stuttgart, and the SL500 pioneered a good many new features.
Braking "by-wire" was introduced with this model and now the norm
in many high-end luxury cars. Mercedes-Benz created a comand center
that groups all the most needed functions while driving into one
center control unit. While it might take you a few moments to learn
how to program the sound-system or even set the clock, with the
precision of Mercedes, just set it and forget it. Performance was
outstanding and for the power this car supplied, the 14 MPG city
and 20 MPG highway was a pretty good trade out. The ease of being
able to go from an totally enclosed coupe to an open cabriolet in
just a matter of moments was another Mercedes mechanical
marvel.
The Car: Attention to detail and enjoyment of motoring are what you
will notice and feel when you set behind the steering wheels of
this fabulous car. Finished in Designo Silver Metallic, this car's
exterior is a close to perfect as possible. Riding on a set of
up-graded 17" alloy wheels with fresh rubber, this is as "turn-key"
as you could hope for. Sitting back into those sumptuous gray
leather bucket seats which cradle you and your passenger are ready
to be transported down whichever road you choose. Looking under the
hood you will find everything in order, looking much like it did
when this car was first assembled. It was a very early production
SL500, most likely ordered to sit on a showroom floor, and the fit
and finish is up to the highest standards in the industry. Well
maintained the wood trim on the door panels and surrounding the
center entertainment and information console in just as fresh as
the day the skilled craftsmen installed it back in Germany.
Powerful, beautiful and timeless all rolled into one package that
only needs you in the driver's seat.
