A pleasure to drive!

The legendary 356 Speedster owes its existence to U.S. importer Max Hoffman, who in the mid 1950’s accounted for one third of all 356 sales worldwide. Hoffman first suggested a stripped down, race prepped version of the 356 in 1950 to Ferry Porsche, hoping that the said model would put a dent in British sports car sales that had started to sweep the United States.

The Speedster debuted in 1954 and featured a low, removable windshield, as well as weight saving parts such as bucket seats, a simple convertible top and removable side curtains instead of traditional roll up windows. The Speedster was a strong seller until 1958. Porsche became skeptical of the cars limited appeal because of its few trimmings and lack of weather protection, especially since the Speedster sold extremely well in warm climates such as southern California. The factory knew continued success would only come from modification to the Speedster design.

The new design entered production in August 1958 and featured traditional seats, a larger windshield, roll up windows and a more conventional convertible top. Porsche trusted body construction to Drauz Coachworks in Heilbronn, Germany. While the first prototypes still carried the speedster script, Porsche was so impressed with the works at Drauz that they simply titled the new model Convertible D. 1330 were produced until September 1959 when the model was replaced by the newly restyled 356B Roadster. With such few built the Convertible D is one of the rarest 356 models and with its classic speedster looks means examples are highly sought after.
