Vehicle Description
1965 Shelby 289 Cobra For Sale - Factory Original, Completely
Original Drivetrain, Fully Doc'd LMC is very proud to offer for
sale this 1965 Shelby 289 Cobra. Debuting at the 1962 New York
automobile show with a bare aluminum finish completed by hand with
steel wool, the first Shelby Cobra captured the full attention of
both the public and the motoring press. Carroll Shelby himself was
already a LeMans winning race car driver, and the 289 Cobra forged
his reputation as a world-class manufacturer of sports cars as
well. Although the first batch of Shelby Cobra road cars were
powered by Ford's 260 cu in. V8, once the 289 cu in. was introduced
to production, after chassis CSX2075, upgrades were constantly
being implemented at AC cars and Shelby American. Rack and pinion
steering, improved rear axle ratios, superior Stewart Warner
gauges, Ford electrics and revised body emblems all made the 289
Cobra a better built sports car. The collector market and those who
chose to drive their Cobras both place a high value on these late
289s as they are more collectible and a much improved driving
experience. This 289 Shelby Cobra is one of those later production
cars with all of the mentioned desirable upgrades carried out on
the assembly line in late 1963/early 1964. This Cobra was
billed by AC cars to Shelby American on 2/24/1964. Shelby American
invoiced it to Chermer Motor Company of Washington, DC on 4/8/1964.
The dealer was invoiced for: Cobra Red/Black - $5195.00, "Class A
accessories"; WSW tires, luggage rack, less chrome exhaust tips,
wind wings, seat belts ($233.50), outside rear view mirror ($4.20),
antifreeze ($3.55) and freight ($310.00). The first owner was a man
by the name of Dodge Olmstead, of Virginia who made the purchase on
10/29/1964. An avid Cobra man, Dodge traded in the Cobra to Archway
Motors of Baltimore towards a different Cobra on 2/12/1966. After
just a handful of careful owners over the next 20 years, one of
which included the very well respected Cobra expert Bill Kemper. It
was purchased by Seymour Levin of Pennsylvania in 1986 and Mr.
Levin kept the car under his care for the next 24 years, until
2010, when Legendary Motorcar was able to purchase this unique,
unrestored Cobra from him. At this point, Legendary Motorcar gave
this Cobra a light mechanical freshening, ensuring the original
drivetrain was in top condition. LMC sold the car to an
enthusiastic lady who would use and enjoy the car just the way it
was. After her term of ownership, LMC was contacted and repurchased
the car. The decision was made to perform a proper restoration on
this wonderfully original late production Cobra. Now, this Shelby
Cobra looks brand new, or as some would say, even better than new.
It has been finished in its factory original Red color, which
shines like it did 50 years ago. The interior looks just as it did
when it was completed by the factory, the engine compartment and
trunk are clean, detailed, and like new. Much like the original
drivetrain, the aluminum body is the true original skin affixed by
AC cars back in 1964. LMC has several bare metal photos of the
original body during its restoration. Moving inside, the Stewart
Warner gauges are very clear and the factory wood steering wheel
has just the right about of patina for a 50 year old Cobra. This
very special factory original cobra comes completely and fully
documented with its factory invoice from AC Cars to Shelby
American, invoice from Shelby American to the original selling
dealer in Washington DC, and it is of course listed in the Shelby
American World Registry pages 59 and 210. This is a very rare and
unique opportunity to be able to purchase a late rack and pinion
cobra with an original drivetrain, original body, original chassis
and have full ownership history. It is complete with full
documentation and is finished in its original desirable factory
colors with a wonderful restoration. Do not miss this unique chance
to own one of the world's most recognized global sports cars.
