An important landmark in the Porsche 911's development was the
introduction of the 964 series in 1989. The 964 differed only
slightly from its predecessor in appearance, while mechanically, it
was another story, and notable changes included a more modern and
powerful engine, ABS brakes, power steering, airbags, and
air-conditioning. In 1992, Porsche offered a limited-edition
cabriolet in the US called the America Roadster, named after the
rare early 356 model, featuring the Turbo's wide arches, suspension
and brakes, plus Cup wheels, a power top, and other unique
convenience options. Power came from the potent Carrera 247 bhp
3.6-liter flat-six.
Completed on November 7, 1991, this 1992 America Roadster was
finished in Black over Black Leather upholstery with US equipment,
cruise control and Porsche crested wheel caps. It was purchased new
at Porsche of Tysons Corner in Vienna, VA, where it resided in the
Washington, D.C. area largely undriven throughout the decade,
before relocating to Palm Beach, Florida in 2000 and eventually
North Carolina in 2009. The Roadster appropriately remains in stock
configuration, with several years of accompanying service records,
including a 30k "Major Service" performed in July 2013 - or just
3,000 miles ago. In November 2016, it received a thorough
inspection and regular service, including new Michelin tires. The
964 is an absolute joy to drive, with all mechanicals and
auxiliaries in seamless working order. The car was just recently
driven and displayed by our staff on the Grafiti Run Porsche tour
of Houston during the TejasTreffen weekend, to an enthusiastic
response by fellow Porschephiles.
Importantly, this Roadster retains its original manuals and
booklets in owner's wallet, compressor, tool roll, space-saver
spare tire, convertible top cover with stowage pouch and Porsche
CoA. Identification decals remain adhered to both door jambs, under
hood and engine bay, along with all factory side glass stickers.
Showing just over 32,000 miles this well maintained and rarely seen
964 widebody roadster is a true show stopper. With just 250
examples built, this numbers-matching and striking triple-black
example of the America Roadster is ideal for the collector and
driver enthusiast alike.
