The Series 370B was built from 1931-1935. All were furnished with custom bodies, and were built in relatively small numbers. A total of 10,903 were made in the seven model years that the automobile was built, with the majority having been constructed in its inaugural year. It was Cadillac's first, and is to date, Cadillac's only standard production V-12 powered automobile. In the mid to late 1920's a number of luxury car manufacturers began working on developing multi-cylinder engines. Cadillac began work on two different multi- cylinder engines, a V-12 and a V-16. Both engines shared the tooling and many of the same components. The V-12 was a truncated V-16, with a bore of 3.125 instead of 3, giving it a displacement of 368 cubic inches with a 45 degree bank angle. The V-12 generated 135 hp vs. the V-16's 175 hp. Both engines featured overhead valves in the first generation. The V-12 had a 140 wheelbase compared to the V-16's 148 wheelbase. The 1931 Cadillac V-12 was introduced in October 1930, and was used as the pace car at the Indianapolis 500. The Cadillac V-12 cost about 2,000 less than the V-16 starting at 3,795. The V-12 model joined a select group of 1930's cars with multi-cylinder engines, namely those manufactured by Franklin, Hispano-Suiza, Horch, Lagonda, Maybach, Packard, Rolls- Royce, Tatra, Voisin, Walter, Marmon and Lincoln. Thanks to its price, in 1931 the Cadillac V-12 outsold the V-16 with 5,733 sold vs a mere 363 for the V-16. The 1932 Series 370B benefited from a radiator shell that flared at the top, more flaring fenders and curved running boards. Mechanical changes included a stiffer frame, Cuno self-cleaning oil filter and Dual Detroit Lubricator carburetors. As the country fell into the Great Depression sales plunged to 1740 units. This surviving example of a luxury automobile from the Golden Era of motor cars has been in two private collections for the past 35 years, showing 40,000 miles on the odometer. Features include the original Cadillac factory build sheet, and numerous factory shop manuals.
