Please contact us for more information. While Fords sporty new Mustang was a huge hit from introduction in 1964, selling some 22,000 units the first day it was available for purchase, it would never be mistaken for a Total Performance poster boy. While even Carroll Shelby at first dismissed the Falcon-based Mustang as a secretarys car, he groomed it into the terror of every race that it entered with his modifications and race-proven upgrades. Given Shelbys ability to capture three consecutive SCCA B-Production championships from 1965 through 1967, smart racers followed his lead and modified their own basic Mustangs for the track. An original A-Code 289-powered car, this 1965 Mustang fastback is believed to have been sold new in California and converted into a racing car very early in its existence. Known history dates to 1980, with the car under the single ownership of a San Diego SCCA member in San Leandro, California until December 2001. During this period, the Mustang was raced in SCCA GT-1 and HSR Historic Sportscar Racing events. According to prior owners, the Mustang ran at tracks including Riverside, Thunderhill in Northern California, and Sears Point. Next, the Mustang passed through two more Californian owners. The current owner acquired the vehicle in mid-2003 to enter the Le Carrera Panamericana Mexico road rally. Unfortunately cancer has limited the owners use. Since then, the current owner reports he has driven the Mustang at Texas World Speedway under CVRA Corinthian Vintage Auto Racing auspices and at MSR Houston, and competed with it in the Texas Mile. The current owner has performed a great deal of sorting work on the Mustang, including installation of a new carburetor and slight detuning of the engine a Ford of Mexico 302 block with 351 heads and an Edelbrock Torker intake to 340 hp in the interest of reliability. Other work included installation of a new 12-gallon fuel cell, repairs to the Toploader 4-speed manual transmission by the respected specialist Dan Williams of North Carolina, a reworked driveshaft, and repairs to the rear-end assembly. Other work involved making the Mustang, which is currently titled in Texas, street-legal. As offered, this outstanding track warrior is painted and finished much like the Shelby GT350R models, including the front spoiler. It retains an original SCCA fire system and roll cage, and is current set up as a 1970s-vintage SCCA GT1 racecar with fender flares and larger tires at the rear of the car. A racing log book is included with the sale of the car. A former winner of Texas Mile, this Mustang was also a magazine feature car, and a copy of the article is included in the auction file, along with photos of the car in California SCCA races and the Texas Mile trophy.
