Please contact us for more information. Rooted in wagon manufacture during the mid-1800s, Studebaker embraced automobile manufacturing at the dawn of the 1900s and soon became one of America's premier automakers. Studebaker was primarily strong in the mid-price market, especially with the Big Six, introduced in 1918 and produced through 1927. First available only as a four-door touring car, the Big Six was offered along an expanded range of open and closed body styles after 1920 due to strong buyer demand. The Big Sixes were powered by a 354 cubic-inch six-cylinder engine producing a then-remarkable 60-horsepower rating. From introduction, Big Sixes were renowned for their exceptional reliability. In fact, at the 1924 New York Auto Show, Studebaker displayed a Big Six with an odometer reading of over 500,000 miles. By 1926, power output was raised to 75 horsepower - at just 2,400 engine revolutions. For 1927, the Big Six was now available along two model lines, the Model EW Commander Big Six along a 120-inch wheelbase, and the custom-bodied Model ES President Big Six on a 127-inch wheelbase, which also lent its chassis to Studebaker's new line of factory-built buses and commercial vehicles. That Studebaker's Big Six was a more than capable automobile was proven by legendary racer Ab Jenkins, who smashed the transcontinental time record for automobile and train in 1926 behind the wheel of a 1927 Big Six Sheriff model. Jenkins made the journey from New York City to San Francisco, California in 86 hours and 20 minutes at an average speed of over 40 miles per hour. Jenkins' time lowered the previous automobile record over that distance by over half a day and beat the fastest train by over six hours - a remarkable achievement Built by Robert Young of Eastern Washington, the 1927 Studebaker Boatail offered here is a highly engaging open-wheel racecar with great period looks, colors, and elemental racing-style bodywork. Power is provided by the legendary Big Six Studebaker 6-cylinder engine and other features include a quick-change oil changer with floating dipstick, racing-type steering gear, and disc wheels. As offered, this great Studebaker Boattail stands ready to deliver an outstanding experience, whether on classic tours or enjoyable blasts down your favorite winding road
