Since big-block V-8 engines were largely eliminated from the option lists by the mid-1970s, Buick engineers experimented with turbocharging for added power for its cornerstone 231 cubic inch V-6. Their first high-profile effort, the 307-hp Century that paced the 1976 Indianapolis 500, marked the first V-6 Pace Car in the event's history.
The downsized Regal intermediate design debuted for 1978, providing the ideal platform for Buick's first series-produced Turbo V-6. Its attractively chiseled lines were perfect for NASCAR speedways and helped Buick to win the Manufacturer's title for 1981 and 1982. To celebrate, the first Grand National Regal appeared in 1982, available in both naturally-aspirated and turbocharged forms.
The Grand National option returned in 1984, now with an all-black exterior, aluminum wheels, Lear-Siegler sport seats, Gran Touring underpinnings and 6 identification badges. The 200-hp turbocharged V-6 now featured sequential-port fuel injection and a distributorless ignition, an automatic transmission including overdrive, and a 3.421 rear end. By 1986, an intercooler bumped output to 235 horsepower, followed by 10 more horses for 1987, making the Grand National America's quickest production car. So much so, it also inspired a limited run of lower-profile Turbo Regals for FBI use.
This Grand National is an actual 6,000-mile Georgia car. The Consignor is only the second owner and it was acquired from the widow of a late Buick Grand National collector. He had three in his possession. This car was the nicest of the three, had the lowest miles, and is equipped with desirable factory T-tops. As offered, this Grand National comes with the original Bill of Sale, original window sticker, title, and some service receipts. The car is completely stock and retains the original paint, original interior, and even the original tires. A garage-kept beauty, it is one of the nicest Grand Nationals in existence and operates flawlessly. Even the power antenna operates as it should. This is a numbers matching car with beautiful factory paint and interior. Recently, the bumper fillers have been replaced with OEM parts due to age deterioration of the originals. Factory options include power windows, power locks, power trunk release, T-tops, cruise control, power antenna, power driver's seat, tilt wheel, AM/FM cassette radio, power brakes front disc, power steering, lighted visor with vanity mirror, limited-slip differential, and air conditioning.
