Introduced at the 1973 Paris Motor Show, the 308 GT4 was originally
labeled as part of the Dino sub-brand. Designed by Turin based
Bertone, the compact design was quite an achievement that combined
a comfortable 2+2 seater wrapped around a then new mid-engine V8
design. The unique wedge shape was aggressive and sporty and paved
the way for future designs. Fully independent suspension and disc
brakes were at all four corners, giving the 308 GT4 excellent
handling and braking. Enzo Ferrari himself was involved with the
design and the interior layout had to meet his specifications of
comfort and ease of operation. A wrap-around dashboard kept
instruments and controls within easy reach while the roof lines
gave the driver a full view of the surroundings. By 1976 the 308
GT4 carried the Ferrari Prancing Horse badge, in an effort to boost
sales in an energy crisis economy. Production lasted until 1980,
when the model was discontinued to make room for the Mondial 8,
however its legacy in Ferrari circles is nothing short of
legend.
