The Special Edition NASCAR Daytona 500 Turbo Trans Am Pace Car led the way at the 23rd running of the Daytona 500 in 1981. The Special Edition Trans Am marked the end of the second generation "F" body as well as the short two-year run of the turbocharged 200-hp, 301 cubic-inch engine.
This outstanding 37,000 actual mile, highly optioned, original survivor has the factory engine, paint, decals and interior. One of a very limited production run of only 2,000 manufactured in 1981 as Special Edition NASCAR Daytona 500 Pace Cars is verified by the "X" in the fifth VIN digit.
The 1981 Special Edition Trans Am is also known as a "Recaro T/A" because it is the only second-generation Trans Am fitted from the factory with the very expensive custom Recaro interior. Appointments include the red and black Recaro racing seats, embroidered birds on the door panels and back seat plus the red illuminated instrument panel. This automobile was assembled in Van Nuys California and shipped to Joe Graeve Motors, Inc. in Apple Valley Minnesota. Joe Graeve Motors traded the car to Brookdale Pontiac in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, where it was purchased by the original owner in April 1981. The sticker price for this Trans Am was a whopping $13,936.23 new.
