When introduced in late 1962, the all-new second-generation Corvette marked an unqualified quantum leap forward in every respect. A Road & Track retrospective article published in 1975 described its impact as an engineering tour de force, going on to praise the relentless engineering improvements bestowed upon its landmark basic design, courtesy of Zora Arkus-Duntov, the Godfather of the Corvette, and his Corvette Engineering team.
In addition to its sleek and futuristic new body design, guided by Larry Shinoda under GM design chief Bill Mitchell, the new Corvette Sting Ray delivered world-beating performance capabilities to match its aggressive good looks. Handling was outstanding, thanks to a thoroughly redesigned chassis including the first use of four-wheel independent suspension on a Corvette, personally developed by Zora Arkus-Duntov. The all-new Corvette generated immediate acclaim with Motor Trend testers remarking, We thought the old model cornered darn well, but theres no comparing it to this new one. Prophetically, Road & Track stated that the second-generation Corvette will know few peers, a statement confirmed by the models countless racing victories and fast-growing sales on the showroom floor.
Before the new-for-1963 Corvette Sting Ray even appeared in Chevrolet showrooms, fast-rising drivers like Bob Bondurant, Allen Grant, Dick Guldstrand, and future Shelby American ace Dave MacDonald had them on the track. In November 1962, the highly aggressive Doug Hooper won the LA Times Grand Prix at Riverside the Sting Rays first race outing and convincingly put Shelbys upstart Cobras back onto their trailers.
Carefully and continuously improved, the Corvette matured into a universally respected sports car. It finally gained a long-awaited set of disc brakes at all four corners for 1965 and continued to feature an ever-expanding list of available powertrain combinations. Finished in outstanding red over black colors, this 1965 Chevrolet Corvette roadster features a 327/300 horsepower V-8 engine and 4-speed manual transmission and knock-off wheels.
