Vehicle Description
1972 saw the introduction of the Mercedes-Benz R107 series of SLs, a series that would be a best-seller for the next 18 years and is now highly collectible. Our 450SL (4.5 liter) was produced in the first year of that series and is as desirable today as it was in the ‘70s.
This ’72 is a standout:
• Nice Mercedes Blue paint
• Matching hardtop
• Dark blue soft top
• Interior is excellent
• Great running
A Great Sports Car
• Paint and Chrome
The Mercedes Blue paint is a beautiful color and is in very nice condition with the exception of some checking on the trunk lid. The paint gleams and shows off the car’s great lines.
All of the chrome is very nice.
The body and underside of the car appear free of rust, and the engine compartment is detailed.
• Interior
The seat upholstery is all in very good condition as are the door panels.
The canvas convertible top is excellent condition except for one small tear on the right front. The rear window is very good but there is a small amount of staining in its center.
The hardtop is painted blue to match the car and is in very good condition.
• Engine
The 4.5 liter V-8 engine runs and drives properly. It starts right up and purrs while waiting to be shifted into gear.
• Transmission
The automatic transmission shifts properly and smoothly as one would expect in a Mercedes sports car.
• Tires, Brakes, Luxury and Monitoring Systems
This 450SL has 4 Goodyear 205/70R14 tires that have most of their tread remaining.
The power disc brakes on all four wheels work properly and smoothly in bringing the car to a rapid and safe stop.
All of the engine/systems monitoring gauges/lights (temperature, fuel and oil pressure) work properly. Similarly, the lights, horn, and turn signals all work as do the tachometer and speedometer. The mileage on the working odometer is 95774 which the Virginia title lists as “actual.”
This car also has a replacement AM/FM/CD radio that works fine. This SL has factory air conditioning that will need, at a minimum, a recharge. The clock appears to be stuck in 1972.
There is nothing to match a Mercedes for Quality
When one sees and drives this 450 SL it becomes apparent why the R 107 series was a hit for 18 years. Solid, comfortable and reliable best describe this sports car. This series is set to become the next generation of SLs that experience value appreciation.
These original cars represent not just a great driving experience but a sound investment as well. Apart from the investment value of this car, it is hard to put a price on the feeling of enjoyment when other drivers and pedestrians wave and give you a “thumbs up.”
