Vehicle Description

To be OFFERED AT AUCTION at Auctions America’s Hilton Head event, November 5, 2016.

Estimate:
$120,000 - $150,000 US

The Mercedes-Benz W186 300 series motorcar was introduced in 1951 at the Paris Exhibition Auto Show. These new motorcars were technologically advanced and rivaled the styling of competitors like Rolls-Royce. The 300 was instantly accepted by the public and quickly obtained by wealthy individuals and celebrities. When they were released they carried a hefty price tag and they were also produced in small numbers.

The term “Adenauer” that is often attached to the 300 series sedans is believed to have derived from the name Dr. Konrad Adenauer, who was the chancellor of Germany. Dr. Adenauer used six 300 models, ranging from 1951 to 1962, during his tenure as chancellor.

The Mercedes-Benz 300C was produced from September of 1955 to June of 1957. During this time period only 1,432 units were manufactured, with 885 of these units being produced in 1956. The 300C stood apart from other like models by having a higher compression engine, dual downdraft carburetors, different rear axle gearing and a standard four-speed gearbox. The engine that powers this German built car is a 2,996-cc overhead camshaft six-cylinder engine that produced 125 horsepower.

The exterior is stunningly presented with blue paintwork, tan convertible top, whitewall tires, body color center caps and very well-presented and polished brightwork. The cabin of the 300C is tailored with tan carpet and tan upholstery. The interior is adorned with beautiful woodwork and a dash-mounted electric clock.

The father of the current owner purchased this example in the 1970s. There are records of restoration and maintenance included with the car that date back to 2006. A lot of time and money have been invested to ensure that this example could be enjoyed for many years to come.

The 300C is a marvelous example of postwar German engineering. This car was made as a luxurious sedan with the reliability and performance that is expected from a Mercedes-Benz. Today, this motorcar is even more desirable, with few maintained to such high standards as this example here. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a very desirable and quite uncommon Mercedes-Benz 300C "Adenauer' Cabriolet.
