Often forgotten in the history of American musclecars is the El Camino. Introduced in 1959 and originally Impala-based, the half-truck – half-car was in response to the success of the rival Ford Ranchero. The official body type was called a “sedan-pickup” by the factory; it was portrayed as a style concept that gave the owner the amenities of a passenger car, but with convenience of a truck.
Surviving just two model years in the Impala family; the El Camino reappeared in 1964, this time using the Chevelle platform; including the high performance engines and powertrains. In 1968 the SS 396 debuted as a new model of El Camino and came with only one of the available 396 V-8 engines. The new El Camino featured a longer hood, angular side windows, a recessed rear window and a rakish front end. This firmly established the El Camino as a musclecar/truck. Chevrolet proclaimed that the Chevelle and El Camino SS provided half the fun of any trip just getting you to your destination.
This 1969 El Camino SS 396 is reported as an “all documented” SS powered by the 396-cid, 325-hp V-8. The transmission is a four-speed manual. Finished in orange with a black interior, the El Camino has the SS package, a black vinyl top, black bed tonneau, radio, power brakes, Rally wheels and BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires.
