For 1966, Ford was offering over 70 options that could be added to the overwhelmingly popular Mustang platform. There was a very carefully planned update to the 1966 model that was subtle with new ornamentation and a greater group of standards; all in keeping this sales juggernaut on the right path.
At the time the Mustang was America’s favorite car, just mentioning Mustang turned a conversation to fun, going places and doing exciting things. Ford Introduced the Mustang on April 17, 1964. The 1966 model year, marked the last year of the original styling of the Mustang. In 1966, the Mustang could be purchased in hardtop, convertible or fastback with either a six- or eight-cylinder engine.
When Ford was forecasting sales for their new pony car, they planned on 100,000 annual sales. On the first day, dealers took 22,000 orders. During the first twelve months after the Mustang introduction, sales sky-rocketed to just shy of a half-million sales. In 1966 Ford broke the one-millionth Mustang mark, only eighteen months after its initial introduction.
Accompanied by documentation that includes the Ford Ownercard (similar to the GM Protect-O-Plate) and various paperwork that shows this to be a car originally from the Prince Motor Company in Abbeville, South Carolina; this beautifully restored 1966 Ford Mustang Hardtop is presented in code Y Silver Blue with trim code 62 Blue and White luxury (“Pony”) interior from new, according to its data tag – the colors it is thoughtfully restored in.
The Mustang is driven by a 289-cid V-8 engine in one of three levels of tune available and is paired up with a console-shift automatic transmission. The new Blue and White interior is attractive and a seemingly perfect match for the exterior. The seat and door panel inserts are shown in white, as is the console and lower dash. Blue is featured on the seat and door perimeters, upper dashboard and carpets. More enticing options are seen with new Rally Pac gauges, original AM/8-track radio, plus the wood-like deluxe dash fascia and steering wheel. The optional vinyl top is new, it is reported to have the original sheetmetal and floorpans and also has an updated front disc braking system. Styled steel wheels wrapped with BFGoodrichrich Radial T/A tires complete a look that still entices a generation
Since the day it was introduced, Mustang wrote a success story that was unmatched in automotive history. When this car came out, the Mustang had already achieved a Tiffany Award for Excellence in American Design, Bronze Medal (highest award) from the Industrial Designers Institute and had the biggest first year sales in the history of the automotive industry with over 418,000 sold.
