Eugene “Bob” Gregory was hired by Edsel Ford in 1931, and quickly climbed the ladder to the top of Ford’s new design department in 1935. His design ingenuity was seen on Ford’s, Mercury’s and the Lincoln Zephyrs. The 1939 Ford is arguably the most stylish Ford of its time, all due to Eugene and his talented design team. For this model year there was, again, a divide between the Standard models and the Deluxe models. Deluxe models were fitted with a banjo steering wheel, a clock and a lockable glovebox. This model year would be the first year that Ford would use hydraulic powered brakes on their cars; and this would also be the last year a floor-shifter was used until a quite a few years later.
In 1939, Ford would produce only 3,561 Deluxe Convertible Sedans. This sedan has been single ownership since 1973 and a part of a prominent collection where it was driven and properly maintained. The engine was rebuilt and the new convertible top was installed in the late 90s. Under the hood is an 85-hp flathead V-8 engine paired with a three-speed manual transmission. The exterior is highlighted with spider wheel covers, dual sideview mirrors, bumper guards and dealer installed rear fender skirts. The interior is beautifully presented with plain stretch upholstery, banjo steering wheel, lockable glovebox, clock, cabin heater, rearview mirror, whiteface gauges and dual sunvisors.
