The 1938 MG TA has a 50bhp 1,292 cc, cast iron inline four-cylinder MG TC engine with pushrod-operated overhead valves, four-speed manual gearbox, beam axle, semi-elliptical springs, hydraulic lever-action shocks front suspension, live axle, rear semi-elliptical leaf springs and Lockheed hydraulic 9″ front and rear drum brakes. One of the most known and loved English sports car companies, MG was formed in the 1920s as the tuning arm of Morris Motors. The first serious production car by MG was the M-Type Midget, followed by a series of successful models ranging from the beautiful SA Grand tourers to the Midget sports cars.
MG was first noticed in America after World War II when many GIs brought home examples of the now famous “T” series line. Introduced in 1936, the affordable sports cars were well loved in the United States. Despite their somewhat frail look, the cars were strong, durable and reliable. Their success was surprising, as they looked dramatically different to what was being produced by American manufacturers at the time. Performance was less than stellar by comparison, but they were enjoyable to drive. With the standard 50bhp engine, the TA was capable of speeds around 55mph; however, when modified with superchargers and enhanced by tuning they could often produce more horsepower than one might want in the little cars.
The MG offered here is an owner restored with extreme attention to detail. It was restored to drive. Everything is new, rebuilt or replaced. Starts easily, drives nicely, performs as expected, stops properly. Everything works correct, such as the 30MPH speed light and dipping headlights. All gauges new or rebuilt.
