1988 CORVETTE CHALLENGE RACE CAR #2. From 1985 to 1987 Corvette
dominated the SS class of the SCCA Showroom Stock Endurance
Championship. Its' record was 19-0. In fact, in 1987 Chevy won the
Manufacturers' Championship by a modest 81-7 margin. SCCA
mercifully ended this brutal massacre by creating an entirely new
class for this car. What else do you do with a car in a class by
itself? The Corvette Challenge Series was born. In 1988 the #2 car
was driven by Juan Manuel Fangio II, nephew of Juan Manuel Fangio
of Argentina, five time Formula One world driving champion. In the
1988 ten race series, the #2 car, campaigned by Tom Gloy
Motorsports, won three races and finished second overall in the
series. No other car in the series won as many races. The car was
purchased by Jim Crist, a Corvette dealer from Largo, Fl., after
the inaugural race series. Jim campaigned the car in SCCA and drove
it to three Regional Championships. The car comes as raced in SCCA
with many spare parts and accessories. During the 1988 Corvette
Challenge, SCCA took the top ten cars after the first four races
and replaced the original sealed engines with replacement motors to
insure that the original engines had not been tampered with. We
have the original sealed engine on an engine stand with the
replacement engine still in the car. There are promotional
materials such as GoodYear tire advertising posters, mounted and
framed, that come with the vehicle as well as various magazine
articles. The original SCCA log book # 88 131 comes with the car
and has been signed by Fangio. The first factory built Corvette
race car is offered for the first time at $49,850. Will consider
interesting Corvette as possible trade. Financing available.
