Styling for the 1934 Ford Model 40B featured some noticeable changes including a flatter grille with wider surround and fewer bars, straight hood louvers, two handles on each side of the hood, smaller head lights and cowl lamps, as well as a reworked logo. The bare metal dash insert was replaced by painted steel. They made an already very attractive car even more handsome. V8 output was again increased to 85 horsepower. The deluxe versions had pinstriping, twin chrome horns and dual rear lights while the inside got more elaborate wood graining.
Finding a nice original condition 34 that has not been chopped, channelled, shaved and frenched, or otherwise modified, is not the easiest task. The work elegant” when used in describing a car from the 1930’s is usually reserved for Packards, Cadillacs, Auburns, and cars of that likeness. The 34 Ford has a definite understated elegant presence about it, unpretentious but classy.
Here is a very nice sedan finished in a period correct tan with dark red pinstriping that looks as though Bonnie and Clyde just got out of it to rob a bank. The matching painted wire wheels with Firestone 5.50X17 wide whitewall tires look terrific. The rear mounted spare tire is fully enclosed and also matches the other four.
This car has the very rare 24 bolt V8 motor that is considered near bulletproof by knowledgeable early Ford fans. It also has some subtle and mostly unseen but very desirable upgrades that contribute greatly to an enjoyable and stress-free driving experience. They include:
12-volt system
Electric wiper
Electric fuel pump
Dual mirrors
Turn signals
All gauges work properly with the new electrical system
The overall condition of this sedan is very good. The paint is nice and looks more like it would have in 1934, instead of an overdone and much too shiny finish that just does not look quite right. The interior is great with no imperfections and very clean. From the chassis up, this is a very solid car and highly presentable in every way.
We were certainly pleased with our road test and found this classic Ford performed flawlessly, the modern upgrades were a welcome addition to our driving experience. The most trouble-prone areas of an early Ford have been addressed with modern parts but the original look is still there for your enjoyment.
