Luxury, class, and quality are words synonymous to Rolls-Royce. The company began its legacy in March of 1906 when Charles Rolls & Henry Royce officially founded Rolls-Royce after two years of an already successful partnership building cars. Over the next 6 decades, Rolls-Royce produced some of the finest cars the world had seen which were known for gorgeous bodies, elaborate interiors, and a superb ride. A good number of these cars were purchased by royal families, movie stars, and business executives. In 1971, Rolls-Royce introduced the Corniche, which essentially was the 2-door version of the Silver Shadow. The Corniche was powered by the 6.75 liter V8 engine that was introduced only a few years earlier in 1968. Throughout the entire Cornice production, every car was fitted with the same, venerable 6.75 liter power plant. Amazingly, the 6.75 liter engine has survived the test of time and is still used in the current Bentley Mulsane.
By 1986, the Corniche II nameplate was released to the U.S. market and in 1988 to other markets. When new, a Rolls-Royce Corniche was priced at $162,000, making it one of the most expensive cars in the world. Over the Corniche II’s production span between 1986 and 1989, only 1,226 cars were produced. The example featured here is a great original car that has only traveled 56,000 miles, and has been well maintained since new. Finished in the traditional Rolls-Royce colors of Mason’s Black exterior over biscuit leather, the paint is overall quite nice with just a few minor flaws. The leather presents in very good original condition, with some light creasing and slight wear visible, but overall in very good order for an original example such as this. The interior woodwork is very nice throughout, and the car is also fitted with a proper Everflex top, to match the interior. The car runs and drives superbly, as you would expect from a Rolls. Also included in the sale are the Rolls-Royce service and maintenance books that came with the car, as well as a clean Carfax.
A Rolls Royce has always been a special car, and a Corniche even more so. The value on good Corniches are rising, as collectors realize what a good value they are. Wonderfully attractive and thoroughly usable, this Corniche is ready to reward its next owner.
