This is literally the best in the world David Hume restored SM; finished in its original color and trim with full upgrades to its Maserati 2.7L FI engine with 5-speed manual transmission making it the most dependable and desirable SM on the planet.
This car was originally for sale in Italy but ended up being one of 28 fuel injected units to enter and sell in the US. Note the Euro-spec headlights which turn left or right with the wheels.
David Hume recently estimated that a similar restoration would cost at or above $170k with one unavoidable disadvantage. This SM has the very last of Citroën's original leather hides. The hides were purchased by David when Peugeot bought Citroën and systematically dismantled and absorbed the historic company. But Hume was wise and farsighted and this icon has been accordingly blessed.
Since completion this jewel has been regularly exercised (note the video) and serviced by the best to keep it the best. The SM has just been through its annual service with minor items being attended to. The hydraulics are great. The a/c is cold as snow. The electrical system is fresh and the car runs and drives as new.
Both Hume and the servicing shop's owner will be delighted to discuss the car with intending buyers. Of course a pre-purchase inspection is encouraged and test drives are conducted in good weather.
A short time ago Hagerty magazine did an admiring spread on the truly unique Citroën SM and its influence and place in motoring history. Hagerty also addressed the SM's growing and future value. They said it now takes more than $100k to buy really good (not outstanding) units. We know of several that have recently sold above $149k. We also know of many project units available below $60k that you could have David Hume restore in time for a great deal of money – all well spent.
As we said, this example is best of the best. We'd say it is underpriced. That is because the car's owner is making significant lifestyle changes and is motivated – but not overly so – to find his SM a new and admiring home. So, if that home is with you, then let's talk and let's make a deal.
