Mercedes-Benz introduced the 220SE in September of 1958. Sometimes referred to as a ‘Ponton’ the 220SE was offered in three body styles: four-door sedan, two-door coupe or two-door convertible. Over the course of the 220SE production run from mid-1958 through November 1960 Mercedes-Benz only produced 1,112 examples of the 220SE cabriolet.
This 1960 Mercedes-Benz 220SE Cabriolet was purchased new by Theodore Roosevelt III, the grandson of President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt. It remained in his ownership for a significant portion of his life over which time he kept meticulous records including service receipts and invoices.
The car has been professionally repainted in black with a matching black convertible soft-top. Additional exterior features include fog lamps and new chrome bumpers. The car rides on thin whitewall tires with factory wheel covers. This Mercedes-Benz is powered by a 2.2-liter, 130-hp, fuel-injected six-cylinder engine which is paired to a column-shift four-speed manual transmission. The interior is completed in what is reported to be the original Parchment, which is accented by a wood dashboard and trim. It features bucket seats and a Blaupunkt long-range pushbutton radio. Included with the car is the original owner’s manual with mileage log as well as a file dating back to 1964 which documents Theodore Roosevelt III’s ownership and service work.
The car recently went through a $10,211 mechanical service which included going through the fuel system, an engine tune up, brake work, and rebuilding the starter. This beautiful 220SE Cabriolet is sure to make a great addition to any collection having been owned by one of the most prestigious families in American history.
