It was one of the few American produced automobiles to offer a steering column that slides left or right to ease vehicle ingress and egress. Made in Wixom, Michigan, this car was shipped to the St. Louis, (DSO code 55 on body number plate) Missouri area, sold new by Valley Ford in Florissant, Missouri and for the past 50 years, the car was part of the Guyon A. Smith family, who lived in Ferguson, Missouri. Twenty years earlier, Mr. Smith served as a B-17 Bomber Pilot during World War II as part of the 457th Bombing Group, that was tasked with dropping incendiaries over Munich and other German cities between 1943 and 1945. Mr. Smith had a final chance to relive his aerial wartime experience in July 2014 when the B-17 named Memphis Belle stopped in St. Louis - http://aeroexperience.blogspot.com/2014/07/b-17-memphis-belle-flies-world-war-ii.html Presented in its very rare and extremely sought after original Samoan Coral, it was a Thunderbird-only color and only available from the factory in 1964. The paint is in decent shape for being completely original, with only minor blemishes visible on close examination. The front and rear chrome bumpers fit well and finish is good with only minor imperfections visible upon close inspection. The front grille is in very good condition showing only minor signs wear. All trim pieces are present and have a good, original finish. The headlights with bezels and taillights are in very condition with no hazing or cracks and the taillights and reverse lamps are in similar condition. This Thunderbird has an attractive period correct presence with this one year-only color. Inside, the original black vinyl seats all look great with no major signs of unusual wear visible. The black-and-silver door panels complement the seats and dashboard and are designed to mirror the mid-century modern cabin motif. The factory carpet is complete and complements the rest of the interior. Included are power windows, beautiful power, white, hide-away convertible top and power seat. The top is original and has some flaws but is fully serviceable. The gauges are displayed properly and function as designed, however the temperature gauge is inoperable. The original Thunderbird steering wheel and AM radio display and show very well. This Thunderbird is equipped with a rarely seen Z-code 300-horsepower 390 CID V-8 engine, fed by a Ford four-barrel carburetorĀ  The power is transferred to the rear wheels by a Cruise-O-Matic three-speed automatic transmission with a 3:00-1 ratio rear differential. Driver assist features include power steering and power drum brakes. Factory dual exhausts, 15-inch original steel wheels with full Thunderbird trim caps and exterior matching rear fender skirts, complete the look. For 1964, the Thunderbird was restyled in favor of a more squared-off appearance, which was most evident when viewing the car from the side or rear. As in previous years, the new Thunderbird continued to be offered in hardtop, convertible and Landau versions. Thunderbirds created a market niche that eventually grew and became known as theĀ personal luxury car segment. Competing vehicles to this Thunderbird in 1964 include the Chevrolet Corvette Convertible, Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu convertible, the Aston Martin DB5 Convertible, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider Veloce, the Austin-Healey 3000 Mark III Sports Convertible and the Mercedes-Benz 230 SL convertible.
