The original Mini is beloved for their agile handling and rugged mechanicals that dominated rally events of the time. In fact, in Cooper form with larger tires and larger motor than the standard economy car, competitors found that it's awfully hard to beat a car that can go around corners without lifting off the throttle. This 1980 Austin Mini pays tribute to that entire heritage and reminds us that big fun definitely comes in small packages.
This brilliant red Mini has been well restored and includes some of the best modifications gleaned after 30 years of Mini development. With fresh paint over the original bodywork, as well as the famous Union Jack on the roof and white hood stripes with John Cooper's signature, this car carries all the best of the original Mini. The shape is unmistakable, and with all the chrome and trim receiving a refresh during restoration, you can't help but smile at this icon.
Part of what made the Mini so revolutionary was that despite its diminutive size, pushing the wheels to corners meant four people could genuinely fit inside. But while those roots are utilitarian, this one has been nicely upgraded to reflect its classic status. Stylish white buckets piped in red give it a sporty appearance. It's a true British icon, so people will be happy to see arrive with the steering wheel on the right. Also as a true English car there's plenty of wood trim on the three-spoke steering wheel, gearshift knob, door trim, and the running across the full dash that has the large Smiths gauge. All the upgrades have truly turned this into a comfortable place to spend so time, and there's even a modern AM/FM/CD stereo with an auxiliary input so you can plug in your iPod Mini in this Mini.
Under the hood is a 1275cc four-cylinder engine. It comes out of a later model MG, but the A-Series motor is a well-known and widely used powerplant that found a home in plenty of British vehicles, including the Mini Cooper, which makes parts availability quite easy. This was the largest engine that could fit in these little cars, which gave them impressive performance, especially under the control of the four-speed manual. Combine the quick nature with the steering that is so exact it feels telepathic, and you've got in your hands all the reasons why people are passionate about driving. Finished with front disc brakes, period-correct Minilite alloy wheels, and sticky Yokohama tires, this is the little performance car that can take down giants.
