By the late 1950’s, the Italian design and coachwork firm Carrozzeria Ghia in Turin had built a reputation for beautiful lines that attracted buyers from around the globe. Italian manufactures such as Alfa Romeo, Fiat and Lancia had already used designs of Ghia’s hand, however it was Fiat that took particular interest in their GT bodies. For the 1960 European Auto Show circuit, Ghia displayed a custom bodied Fiat that caught the attention of entrepreneur and Hollywood producer and Bert Sugarman, who later approached Ghia and made strong arguments for putting the car into production. Sugarman thought the vehicle would have stronger appeal if it utilized a V8 platform. The final design applied the drivetrain, frame and suspension components of a 1966 Plymouth Barracuda “Formula S” including the 235 horsepower 273 cubic inch (4.5 liter) V8 engine. Penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the design was that of a striking 2+2 roadster with seamless bumpers and compounded curves sculpted from steel bodywork. The aptly named Ghia 450SS debuted at the 1966 Turin International Auto Show. Its hand built construction meant that production was limited and only fifty two were built between 1966 and 1967. With classic Italian lines and proven American V8 performance the 450SS appeals to many, but with as few as twenty six known to exist today finding one can prove challenging.

The 1967 Ghia 450 SS featured here is finished in gorgeous Dark Red with a beautiful new Black leather interior. This Ghia is fitted with all available options, including the extremely rare factory hardtop as well as air-conditioning, power steering, power disc brakes, chrome Baroni wire wheels, woodgrain Ferrero steering wheel, and more. We are proud to offer one of the finest examples of a 450 SS available on the market today to the most sophisticated collector or investor who appreciates the potential of this great Italian classic.
